    Frequently Asked Questions

      1. What happens to my website when it's cloudy outside?
      A. There's often a misconception about photovoltaic solar power generation that it doesn't work when it's cloudy. In some cases it's actually a little more efficient when there's some cloud cover. Our data center has a solar array of 120 large solar panels, a location in the desert area of Southern California that gets nearly year round sun, and an enormous bank of battery storage, so they can power the entire data center's electricity and cooling 100% of the time even with extended stretches of cloud cover.

      2. What type of backup power do you have?
      A. If for any reason there were many days in a row no sunlight at all (like a volcano erupts and covers the sun), we have a backup generator that runs on propane gas. Propane gas is cleaner burning than diesel, which is found at most other hosting companies. Propane does not emit large amounts of carbon dioxide and produces no sulfur dioxide or particulates, which is the primary causes of the greenhouse effect and acid rain. And since propane vaporizes rapidly, it won't contaminate soil or groundwater. Finally, as a third-tier of backup, we are connected to the electric company's grid supplied power. Though we've never had to use grid power, if all else failed, we could always resort to using it.
